Bishop James Ruggieri visited Immaculate Conception Church in Calais on Monday, September 2, 2024, and presided over the 9:00 am daily Mass, concelebrating it with pastor Father Roland Berngeh and visiting priest Father Jude Thaddeus Lawsamba.
The bishop also announced that he had chosen Father Roland to be vicar for the deanery which extends from Calais to Jackman. As vicar, Father Roland will be visiting the priests in this large area, reviewing sacramental records, providing spiritual support and acting as a liaison with the bishop’s office.
Before the end of Mass, Mike Boies, head of the Parish Council, delivered some words of welcome to the bishop and thanked him for travelling so far to be with us. Father Roland invited parishioners to stay for Benediction, before meeting and talking with the bishop, and invited them to return later to spend time in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.
The bishop greeted parishioners after the Mass, and talked with them over light refreshments in the Parish Hall.
After the reception, the bishop headed to St. Ann’s Church in Peter Dana Point to meet parishioners and other tribal members there. Father Roland also promised a stop at St. James Church in Woodland, so the bishop could see the dire need for roof repairs for himself.
Before heading back to Portland, the bishop took the opportunity to pray before the Blessed Sacrament.
